AIDS Vaccine Market
In 2009, the vaccine market in general generated an estimated $22 billion in sales and is considered one of the most lucrative healthcare segments. The actual benefit, in revenue and human life, for a safe and effective vaccine to combat HIV/AIDS is so vast that it makes it difficult to calculate. However, worldwide vaccine sales are estimated to exceed $3 billion per year for a safe, effective preventive vaccine and plus an additional $6 billion per year for a therapeutic vaccine.
AIDS is considered the most lethal infectious disease existing in the world today. Globally, over 34 million people are living with HIV/AIDS - 30 million have died. Each day an additional 7,000 new infections occur, more than 2.5 million every year.
In the United States alone, over one million people are living with the disease with 50,000 new cases reported each year. Although infection rates have stabilized somewhat in the U.S, this does not diminish the need for a vaccine to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS.
